Umbria is one of the smallest regions of Italy. It's called "the
green heart of Italy" and it's situated between Tuscany and Rome.
The Umbrian region expresses its ancient and modern spirit, preserving
its traditions and reproducing images of highly composite reality.
The cultural and economical importance of craft activities in Umbria is
bound to ancient roots and began in Medieval times. The ceramics of Deruta,
Perugia, Gubbio, Gualdo Tadino, Orvieto, Città di Castello and
Umbertide asserted themselves all over Italy. The magnificence of the
bright, white enamel work in Deruta became renowed for the nimble graphic
curves of its figures.
Today, the Umbria Region still recognises the importance of crafts and
promotes their development, working to keep traditions alive and promotìng
their development by encouraging young artisans to develop their skills
and set themselves up in business.
Of all of Umbria's traditional arts and crafts, the one that has developed
to the highest degree of technical and artistic expression and deservedly
achieved the greatest fame world-over, is the production of ceramics and
majolica.
This crafts are the product of a complex combination of cultural factors,
talent in design and enterprising spirit, which all together, represent
the reality of "Made in Umbria" today.
